On-spot Report on the 5th Global Phenol / Acetone Forum of ICIS

The 5th Global Phenol / Acetone Forum was held in Budapest, Hungary on 3,June, with delegates from all industries involving in phenol and acetone over the world which included INEOS, ERTISA, SUNOCO, POLIMEERI, PTT, Kumho, Mitsui Chemical and Sumitomo. CBI (Shanghai) was invited to deliver a presentation on supply & demand of China domestic phenol and acetone and forecast in the approaching three years, which was highlighted by most delegates concerned about the Chinese phenol and acetone industry with questions over the final verdict of anti-dumping case on upcoming 9 June, 2008. Moreover, speakers from other part of the world also expressed their own opinions on phenol and acetone industry, as well as China market exerting great influence.,
John Keeley, from internation e-CHEM, held that global phenol downstream demand will increase by 4%, and that of BPA above 5% and of PC haunted by feeding bottle issue 6-7%, further forecasting that imports are to be squeezed out of Chinese market on its own zooming capacity.
John Macdonald, from JLM INDEUSTRIES, presented his view on China market in light of macro economy, casting doubt on phenol and acetone demand in China battered by “May 12 earthquake”, along with slowdown of US economy and post-Beijing Olympic Games.
The plight, confronting most producers adopting isopropyl benzene technology, was the oversupply of acetone on limited utilization in derivatives, along with increasing phenol capacity. This forum was complete on 4th June. |
