China PVC producers reduce output due to Olympics

China PVC producers reduced operation rates as getting enough feedstock calcium carbide and chlorine was becoming difficult with the Olympics-related transportation restriction, said producers on Friday.
Meanwhile, the output of calcium carbide has dropped by 50% in recent days due to shortage of electricity, said producers in Shanxi of north China。
Most producers in other regions also cut operation rate on increasing power cost, hampered logistic operation and decreased feedstock inventory.
Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Co (SCAC) , an ethylene based PVC producer in Shanghai, is running at 50% rate due to lack of ethylene and hydrochloric acid.
Tianjin Dagu is running at about 70% rate due to chlorine problem while Shandong Qilu Petrochemical decreased operation rate because its parent company Sinopec wants to ensure production of gas and gasoline.
Carbide-based PVC traded up CNY150/tonne at yuan (CNY) 8,850-8,950/tonne ($1,294-1,308/tonne) ex-warehouse (EXWH) east and south China.
Meanwhile, ethylene-based PVC prices rose by CNY50-100/tonne to CNY9,050-9,250/tonne ($1,323-1,352/tonne) EXWH east and south China, said traders.
